The Roman Villa of Pisões is located in the municipality of Beja, about 10 km southwest of that city. The remains of the Pisões Roman complex extend over a protection area of about 6Ha, cut by a path that divides it into two adjacent areas. On the east side there is the area of the dam (“barragem”) with about 2Ha and on the west side the area of the Villa, with about 4Ha.
The Pisões Roman Villa, discovered accidentally in the late 1960s during the course of agricultural work, is one of the most original Roman villas in the Iberian Peninsula of remarkable archaeological value.
The Pisões project includes four actions:
- I. Creation of an Interpretation Center for the visitor at the Villa Romana de Pisões;
- II. Physical interventions for the conservation, restoration and qualification of visitable ruins;
- III. Qualification of the Villa’s visitation route, providing it with resting points that improve pedestrian accessibility and promoting accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
- IV. Development of multilingual audiovisual and augmented reality media to provide information to visitors (incluing Portuguese, Spanish, English and Chinese).
